In the world of Crossfit recovery, CBD oil is all the rage right now because of its anti-inflammatory health benefits. In fact, unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, you can’t go anywhere without hearing about how awesome CBD is for your body.
And there’s a reason for that…
It’s because CBD really works, as long as you know what you’re buying, and as long as you buy high quality CBD.
Unfortunately, because the FDA hasn’t established clear rules and guidelines for everything CBD (extraction methods, lab testing protocols, production standards, etc).
Because of that, there’s a lot of bad actors out there who are truly ‘snake oil’ salesmen. I mean they are literally putting olive oil in a bottle and calling it CBD oil, and selling it to you for $100.
As a Crossfit enthusiast myself, and as someone who beats up their body regularly doing wod after wod, I know what it’s like to wake up sore everyday.
I know what it’s like to do that zombie walk from the bedroom to the bathroom first thing in the morning because I’m so stiff and in pain. (I apologize to my significant other for the grunts that come along with that walk… 😉)
That’s why I co-founded our company Wod Recovery Rx. Our mission is to kick Crossfit body recovery in the butt with the best quality CBD products.
Part of our mission is to educate workout warriors on the benefits of CBD and body recovery, which is what you’re going to get with the rest of this article.
CBD Basics To Avoid Any Confusion
There is A LOT of confusion out there about CBD, THC, marijuana, hemp, cannabis, you name it. In all honesty, when I first got into this industry, I didn’t even know what CBD was.
Here’s the simple explanation that you need to know…
Cannabis is a species. The cannabis species has 2 main plants… the hemp plant and the marijuana plant.
The hemp plant is long and thin, kind of like a tall weed. The marijuana plant is short and stocky, kind of like shrubbery or thin bushes.
BOTH the hemp and marijuana plants have many compounds, or cannabinoids, in them. There are roughly 100+ cannabinoids that have been identified to date.
The two most abundant ones are CBD and THC. Let me repeat that… BOTH the hemp plant and marijuana plant have both CBD and THC in them.
The difference is the marijuana plant is typically high in THC and low in CBD. The hemp plant is high in CBD and low in THC.
And if THC is something you’ve heard before, that’s because THC is what gets you high.
If you just remember 1 thing from all of this, remember this… THC gets you high, CBD gets you healthy! 💯
With that being said, the number one question we get all the time is ‘will CBD get me high?’. Based on what you just learned, you know the answer is no.
Why You Want Hemp-Derived CBD Oil For Crossfit Recovery
The main reason you want a hemp-derived CBD oil, or a ‘hemp oil’, is purely because of legal reasons.
At the time of this writing, the 2018 Farm Bill passed in December of 2018 making hemp and its derivatives federally legal. That means hemp and CBD derived from hemp are now removed from the Controlled Substances list.
Marijuana is still on the Controlled Substances list, meaning anything derived from the marijuana plant is technically illegal.
It’s legal if it’s produced and sold from licensed operations in states that have legal marijuana laws.
More than 30 states have legal marijuana laws, and it’s only a matter of time before marijuana is legalized across every state and made federally legal.
But for now, CBD derived from the hemp plant is where it’s at for Crossfit recovery.
What makes hemp-derived CBD legal is that it has less than .3% THC in it’s final product. Remember, hemp has both CBD and THC in it. But at .3%, the amount is so small that there’s no way you could get high from it.
You’d literally have to drink a gallon of CBD oil to maybe feel some effects. If you drink a gallon of anything, you’ve got bigger problems to deal with. 🙌
So at .3% or less THC, the federal government is saying that the product is safe to use and you won’t get high.
What Does CBD Help With?
This is where the fun really starts for Crossfit recovery. With Crossfit or any other high-intensity training, it’s normal to push your body to the limit and put it through the ringers.
Living life sore is just a normal part of being a Crossfit junkie. Dealing with lactic acid buildup is like breathing… it’s not going to stop. Waking up with achy joints and tight muscles is also par for the course.
The good news for you is CBD oil will help with a lot of these normal problems. Here are the main benefits of using CBD oil for your Crossfit recovery.
The number one thing Crossfitters have to deal with is inflammation. Every time we tear our muscles from the wods, we create inflammation.
If we have a poor diet, poor sleeping habits, or don’t give our bodies enough rest, we create inflammation. You may know this already, but the number one cause of most of our bodies problems in life today is inflammation.
When we use CBD oil for inflammation, it’s like unleashing Mike Tyson in his prime. Yes… CBD oil works that well.
Plus, it’s natural and it comes from Mother Nature. I think it’s safe to say that we trust Mother Nature a heck of a lot more than we trust Big Pharma and the evil pills they produce.
When CBD oil gets into your body, it syncs up with your CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are part of your Endocannabinoid System.
Without getting too technical on what I just said, our bodies have a system that actually wants and needs CBD.
When CBD connects with the receptors, the body goes to work to heal itself in the most efficient way possible. The biggest benefit for Crossfit recovery during this process is reducing body inflammation.
Relieves Stress & Anxiety
One of the biggest benefits to using CBD oil for Crossfit recovery is what it does to your stress and anxiety.
All I can tell you is from my own personal experience is that after about 30 days of constant use, I just woke up one day and felt relaxed and at peace with my body.
It was almost like I was floating in the air with no gravity, just relaxing in a vacuum of space.
Stress on the body is a real thing and real issue, especially when you’re doing superhuman workouts like Fran, Cindy, Grace, Murph, and many many others.
Add in the stress of life and the stress of just being a human being in society today, you can see that ‘distress’ is no joke.
When you consistently take your CBD oil daily, your body will respond positively and you will just relax more.
It’s no secret that our diets today are typically pretty poor. Let me take that a step further and say our food supply, food infrastructure, and the quality of the foods we have access to are also pretty poor.
We are dealing with a system that produces mostly processed foods, processed sugars, genetically modified crops, nothing is truly organic, and our overall health as a society reflects this problem.
Because of the crap food that we have access to, our bodies are working overtime on trying to get the toxins out of our body.
On top of that, our bodies are not working at optimum levels. That’s like trying to do a full days work at the office while being sick with a 101 degree temperature.
With CBD oil, overall digestion is greatly improved allowing your body to work at a more optimal and balanced level.
Our bodies really do all the healing when we are sound asleep. For many of us, we don’t get enough sleep. That has repercussions on our overall health.
The good news is when CBD oil helps lower inflammation and relaxes the body, your sleep quality dramatically increases.
Imagine waking up feeling refreshed ready to conquer the world. Imagine popping right out of bed not sore and walking without stiffness.
Now imagine killing your next wod because you feel great instead of tired and lethargic.
Reduces Joint Pain
As we get a little older in age, and as we add more miles to the odometer so to speak, we will most likely develop some level of joint issue.
For some, it may be something as simple as soreness in a specific area. For others, it could be full blown arthritis or worse.
I’ve been to my fair share of chiropractors and physical therapists in the last 10 years. They all LOVE Crossfit athletes because it keeps them in business.
But it makes sense, right? We do a lot of high intensity work with weights, barbells, gymnastics, olympic movements, running…. And those damn burpees!
Nevertheless, CBD oil helps tremendously with reducing joint pain. By keeping inflammation in check, the amount of swelling and irritation at the joint level is dramatically reduced.
That allows you to work out with a healthier body, thus reducing the chance of injury. But if you try and deadlift 500lbs and your max is like 300lbs, CBD oil can’t help with stupidity.
What CBD Oil Delivery Method Is Right For Me?
This is a good question to ask. For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to tell you the 3 most common ways to get CBD oil into your body. All 3 have pros and cons.
The first method is by vaping with a vape pen. The benefit of this approach is that it’s a direct contact hit that starts to work instantly.
You inhale the CBD liquid via smoking and it gets into your bloodstream right away. The downside of this approach is that the effects typically only last an hour or so.
The next method, which is the most common, is taking a CBD oil tincture sublingually. You put the oil under your tongue and leave it for 60-90 seconds before swallowing it.
That allows for the magic to happen. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour for the CBD oil to kick in, and the effects will last typically 4-8 hours.
The final method is by eating edibles infused with CBD. This can be anything from water to gummy bears to cookies, whatever. The positive is the taste and variety. The downside is a few things.
For one, there’s no set amount of time as to when it will kick in. The food has to be metabolized and broken down in the body first. So the edible might take effect in 1 hour, 4 hours, who knows.
The other downside with edibles is consistency. Ask anyone who’s taken edibles and they’ll tell you every piece or every bite is different.
If it’s a gummy, one might have a little bit of CBD while the next one might have a huge amount.
What CBD Dosage Is Right For Me?
This is an important point to talk about for Crossfit recovery, and the answer is the oldie but goodie… ‘it depends’.
I look at it like this…
If someone is just starting out with CBD for the first time, and is really scared to try it, kinda like dipping your toes in the water, then I’d go with a starter dosage like a 250mg.
The 250mg will not be very strong but it will get results. However, that dosage may not be strong enough for most people.
If someone is like me who does Crossfit, then you will need a stronger dosage, like 500mg or 1000mg. I personally use 500mg myself, but I actually double up on it since I’m a little bigger in body size.
I’ve also used 1000mg before and 1500mg before, and each one of those dosages has their purpose.
The reality is good quality CBD will work at almost any level, but so much of it depends on what’s going on with the individual.
For someone who is in great health and is just looking for a daily supplement, a low dosage of 500mg is probably just fine.
For someone who has medical issues, let alone serious medical issues, maybe 1000mg, 1500mg or a higher dosage is needed. It really just depends and there is no right or wrong answer.
Listen to your body and let your body guide you to where it wants to go.
How Do I Properly Take CBD For Crossfit Recovery?
Since I’m not a doctor and I can’t give you any official medical advice, all I can do is guide you on best practices.
For the sake of this section, I will be referring to the 2nd delivery method as described above… the oil in a tincture.
What we recommend is taking 1/2 of a dropper, 1-2 times per day. When you put the oil under your tongue, hold it there for 60-90 seconds before you swallow.
When you do this, the capillaries under your tongue soak up all the CBD oil goodness. This allows the oil to get into your bloodstream much quicker than just swallowing right away.
Do this routine for 1 week and monitor your results. The second week, increase your dosage and see how it affects you.
Keep upping the dosage until you find your sweet spot where you are in balance with the CBD oil and you’re getting noticeable results.
Remember, everyone is different in size, shape, body composition, immune system, etc. What works for one person may not work for the next person.
If you do 4-5 wods per week where you’re laying on the floor after every wod, you may need a stronger dosage than someone going just 2-3 times a week.
How Long Will It Take For The CBD Oil To Work For Crossfit Recovery?
What you have to absolutely understand is that CBD oil is NOT like taking an ibuprofen. Yes, the pain relieving effects are more powerful than a pain pill, but it’s not instantaneous.
With a pain pill, you pop it in and in 30 minutes later, you feel great. As we all know, that doesn’t do anything except mask the problem.
CBD oil for Crossfit recovery is a cumulative effect. You build it up in your system over time and your body takes care of the problem.
We always tell people you need to give it 30 days before you start seeing and feeling results, but typically the time frame is much shorter.
However, you must take your CBD oil every day. It’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush your teeth daily, then we need to have a different conversation.
Do yourself a favor and put your bottle where you will see it everyday. I keep 2 bottles around at all times. I keep 1 by my coffee as that’s usually the first thing I get in the morning. The other bottle is on my desk where I know I will be on my computer at some point during the day.
When I see the bottle, that’s my reminder to take it right then and there. My significant other keeps more bottles by our bed so we don’t forget to take it at night, if that’s what we are doing at that time.
Will I Fail A Drug Test Using CBD?
This is one of the biggest concerns we get when we talk to potential customers of ours. You see, the Crossfit community is made up of a bunch of badasses who are professionals at what they do.
There are military members (active and vets), police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, doctors, lawyers, corporate professionals and many others in the Crossfit community.
A lot of these people are routinely drug tested, and if they fail a drug test, they might lose their career. That just wasn’t an option for us when we created this company.
What people don’t realize is that even though federally legal hemp-derived CBD has less than .3% THC, it still has THC.
And since CBD is best used when taken daily, you can build up a level of THC in your system over time.
I actually have met people who have failed a drug test using legal hemp-derived CBD. The products they were using were from legit companies that I know very well, so it wasn’t because of a shoddy product.
The reality is that drug tests are variable and set at different levels for identifying a ‘positive’ result.
What I mean is one drug test can be ‘positive’ for any THC found, while another drug test might only show ‘positive’ after a certain threshold of THC is reached.
Bottom line is there’s no consistency in testing. However, like I said before, we couldn’t take that chance.
We made our CBD oil 100% ZERO THC, yet we kept it full spectrum. I’ll talk more about that below, but basically we did extra work to remove the trace amounts of THC in our CBD oil.
What To Look For In A Good CBD Oil?
If you’re still with me at this point, thank you very much. You are literally getting a crash course in CBD and Crossfit recovery, and hopefully you’ve learned a thing or two.
The next part is what you really want to commit to memory. There are a few very important things you want to look for in a good CBD oil.
Made In The USA
Right now, you want to only get your CBD oil from hemp that is grown and sourced in the good ol’ USofA. Hemp is being imported in from other countries like China. Until there are federal guidelines and standards about the quality, stick with home grown hemp.
Even though hemp is no longer a drug on the Controlled Substances list, it’s still not allowed to be certified organic… yet.
So if anyone claims their CBD oil is organic, what they really are saying is their product comes from a supply chain that uses organic processes and procedures.
Our CBD oil falls into this category. Where the hemp is grown is done with organic standards. The same goes for the extraction process and the manufacturing process.
I don’t think I need to spend any more time on this section. The fact you’re even considering CBD oil tells me you’re open to healthy living.
As we know GMO’s are evil and nothing more needs to be said about companies like Monsato/Bayer.
3rd Party Lab Tested
Any good and reputable CBD oil will be 3rd party lab tested, and the results will be made available for customers to see.
The lab tests will show what exactly is in the CBD oil, specifically the potency of the cannabinoids like CBD.
If any company can’t produce a lab result for their products, proceed with extreme caution. I personally would avoid them myself, though.
Full Spectrum Profile
You typically do not want a CBD isolate. A CBD isolate is where all the cannabinoids are removed during the extraction process except for CBD.
While this sounds good in theory, many studies have shown a full spectrum profile gets much better results than a CBD isolate.
Getting a full spectrum CBD oil is more expensive, but it’s well worth it.
When all the cannabinoids are kept intact, the finished product just works so much better like hearing beautiful music from all the instruments in an orchestra.
An isolate is like just hearing a flute.
What To Avoid When Buying CBD Oil
I can’t emphasize enough to use some common sense when it comes to buying CBD oil. The truth is good quality CBD oil is expensive.
The saying goes that ‘you get what you pay for’, and in this case it’s true.
High quality CBD oil will typically be in this price range… typically. For a 250mg, you’re looking at $30-$50. A 500mg dosage will cost between $50-$70.
For a 1000mg, I’ve seen the range be $80-$120. For higher dosages, you can gauge what the price should be based on what I just provided.
What you want to avoid is the crap you see all over Amazon, ebay, etc where it just seems too good to be true.
If you see 1500mg or 2500mg for $30, just pass on it. There’s absolutely no way in the world that can be a legitimate CBD dosage. If you see 3000mg for $40, just move along. The real question is what is it 3000mg of? 🤔
I think the worst I saw was 10,000mg for like $60. I mean, really?
It actually makes me both sad and mad because people just don’t know, and all they want is better health in their life.
I’ve actually seen like 3500mg from an established company for like $250. That sounds about right to me for a legit product.
